Agnes Spencer Hut, Patterdale

Further information for New-to-the-Hut Members of Cleveland MC

and Chamois MC with whom we have a reciprocal arrangement.

If you’ve stayed at our Hut before then very probably the information on our main Staying at the Hut page will be sufficient, but if you haven’t been before the following information might be useful, and hopefully encourage new guests to give it a try.

Location:

The Hut is in a small community at Grisedale Bridge CA11 0PJ, mid-way between the villages of Glenridding and Patterdale,  Grid Reference 391162, What3words innocence.diet.stow.

Both villages have a pub, and Glenridding has a couple of cafes and two restaurants, plus two small shops.  There is also Tourist Information, car charging and recycling in the main car park.

Planning to stay:

Check the Calendar:  This is under the main Our Hut tab.  Full members of CMC are entitled to stay at the Hut without booking.  However, you should check out the Hut Calendar on our website before travelling.  The Calendar is colour coded which is incredibly useful if you’re using a computer, but not so good using a phone when it is necessary to click on to the entries to see what they say.

There are several things to watch out for;  Red entries are the only times you cannot stay.  Red is used to denote an Exclusive Stay, only on a Tuesday and Wednesday night, and booked at least two-weeks ahead.  This is a booking by one of our members to use the Hut exclusively, and is the only time this can happen.  The other time Red is used is to denote essential maintenance when it would be impractical or unsafe for members to stay.

Other colours to look out for are Green and Yellow.  Green bookings are for external clubs who use the larger Main Room to sleep, but the Members’ Room is still available for club members to stay.  Yellow bookings are Family meets which are the only time under 14s can stay at the Hut.   As a CMC member you can stay alongside Green or Yellow bookings but be aware that the Hut may be busy.

You do not need to book but please feel free to drop an email to hut.booking.cmc@gmail.com if you have any queries about your stay.

Get a Key:  available from Hon Hut Warden David Richards (01609 882585) on payment of a £15 deposit.  Please leave enough time to do this before your stay!

What to take:  in addition to your sleeping bag, pillow and wash kit, you will need a tea towel and hand towel for the kitchen.

Car Parking:  there is limited Car Parking at the Hut, so it is a good idea to car share when possible.

Connectivity: There is no WiFi at the Hut, but coverage is now pretty good via 4G depending on your provider.

On Arrival:

The Hut is basically in two parts:  you enter by the single storey annex which houses the toilets, washing-up facility, shower room and drying room.  The two storey part of the building houses the cooking facilities (with two cookers and two fridge-freezers), a large dining table and a seating area with a stove.  All electricity and fuel for the stove is included in the fee per night.

On arrival you may need to switch on the electricity.  The electricity consumer unit is in the corner on the right in the main room.  Use the single isolation switch to turn the power on.  The emergency light above the front door and the one just inside the main room are “on” permanently so please don’t try to find a way of turning them “off”!

If the water has been turned off, turn it on using the blue switch in the ladies’ toilet.

If the fridges aren’t on, turn on one or both as required.

Having sorted out the services, the next thing to do is Sign In to the Hut Log  on the table near the fridges.

Rubbish and Recycling:  You will see a bin in the kitchen for food and other waste, but please keep recycling separate and take it to the recycling bins in the car park at Glenridding, or take it home with you.   Instructions about rubbish disposal and recycling are on the notice board near the Hut Log.

There are also instructions on the hut notice board in the seating area for lighting and using the stove

Sleeping:  There are electrical and USB socket above the mattresses in both rooms upstairs.  If you are alone or in a small party, feel free to spread out, but please note that if the Hut becomes busy it is expected that people will minimize their “space” enabling the larger room to sleep 12 and the Members’ room to sleep 8.

Leaving:  Please leave the Hut as (we hope) you found it:

  • Clean out the stove, using the metal bucket if the ashes are potentially still hot

  • Vacuum and mop through, and ensure all surfaces are wiped down

  • Ensure all cutlery and crockery is washed, dried and put away

  • Ensure the fridges are empty, clean, switched off and left open

  • Ensure all rubbish is placed in the bin outside, and all recycling is taken away

  • Check the toilets and shower room are clean

  • Check the drying room is empty

  • Turn off the water by the Blue switch in the Ladies’ toilet, and turn off the electricity by the single isolation switch in the corner above the fridges.

  • Once home, please remember to pay your Hut fees!

Finally, and most importantly, reflect on your great First Visit and plan to come back and stay again soon!
